This specimen was struck for El Salvador by the Royal Mint of London, which also struck the similar 1974 three centavos and other Salvadoran coinage of the 1973-1994 period. Paradoxically, this coin has such a low catalog value that it is difficult to find. Dealers do not find it worthwhile to stock such items. This coin bears the portrait of Francisco Morazan, a Salvadoran general who defeated Guatemalan attempts to conquer El Salvador in the nineteenth century. Altho three centavos were issued before, in 1913 and 1915, this odd denomination was struck only in 1974 along with a two centavos (KM 147).
Recorded mintage: 10,002,000 plus 2,000 proofs.
Specification: 2.6 g, nickel-brass.
Catalog reference: KM 147.
