Einseideln 1783 ducat Fr-232
This specimen was lot 3201 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 2,400 CHF (about US$3,327 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Schwyz, Einsiedeln, Abtei, Beatus Küttel, 1780-1808. Dukat 1783, Sehr selten. Fast vorzüglich. Henkelspur (?). Starke Kratzer auf der Vorderseite. (Switzerland, abbey of Einsiedeln, Beatus Küttel, 1780-1808, ducat of 1783, Very rare, About Extremely Fine, perhaps once mounted. Heavy scratches on obverse.)"
The abbey of Einseldeln in the canton of Schwyz was founded in the ninth century. The figure of the enthroned Madonna holding the baby Christ on her left knee, which appears on an abbey seal from 1239, attracts 800,000 tourists a year. The abbey was independent in the eighteenth century with the mint right, when this rare ducat was struck, but lost its independence during the French occupation of 1798.
