Eichstatt 1757-MF thaler Dav-2208
This specimen was lot 40532 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $2,644. The catalog description[1] noted,
"GERMANY. Eichstatt. Taler, 1757-MF. Sede Vacante. NGC MS-64. Lightly toned and very attractive."
The bishopric of Eichstatt, now in Bavaria, occasionally issued coins. This thaler minted in Nuremberg is a "Sede vacante" (vacant seat) thaler which was issued on the occasion of the death of the incumbent bishop (or pope) and prior to the elevation of his successor.
