Egypt AH 1255(2) 10 qirsh

The coin shown is a 10 qirsh, composition silver, from the reign of Sultan Abdul Mejid. It was struck at the Cairo Mint. The obverse bears the toughra, or signature, of the sultan. Below the toughra is the denomination (qirsh), abbreviated as 'sh', with the number 10 above. The reverse carries the ascension date and the text minted in Misr (Misr is Arabic for Egypt). The date is written as AH 1255 year 2, which translates to about 1840 AD.

The coin pictured was lot 13259 and sold on Sept 9, 2004 at the 2004 September (HWCA) Signature Sale #357 for $805. The catalog description noted, "Abdul Mejid 10 Piastres 1255AH Year 4, KM231, lightly toned AU-UNC, tiny spot on the reverse. Vertical edge milling. A fantastic example of this very scarce type. From the Lake Pearl Middle Eastern Collection."
