The coin shown is a silver five qirsh from the reign of Sultan Abdul Mejid. It was struck at the Cairo Mint. The obverse bears the toughra, or signature, of the sultan. Flower to the right of the toughra. Below the toughra is the denomination (qirsh), abbreviated as 'sh', with the number five above. The reverse carries the ascension date and the text minted in Misr (Misr is Arabic for Egypt). The date is written as AH 1255 year 5, which translates to about 1843 AD. Uslu[1] lists this date as very rare. The coin pictured was lot 21645 in a Heritage Auction Galleries sale of January 8, 2005. The catalog description noted, "Abdul Mejid 5 Piastres 1255AH Year 5, choice toned XF+, boldly struck and very attractive. Very rare grade."
