The coin shown is a 1 para, composition copper, from the reign of Sultan Mahmud II. It was struck at the Cairo Mint. The obverse bears the toughra, or signature, of the sultan. The reverse carries the ascension date and the text minted in Misr (Misr is Arabic for Egypt). The date is written as AH 1223 year 28, which translates to about 1834 AD.
The specimen shown was lot 13209 in Heritage sale 357 (Long Beach, September 2004), where it sold for $322. The catalog description reads "Mahmud II Para 1223AH Year 28, choice AU, trace of original mint luster, very scarce type and grade. From the Lake Pearl Middle Eastern Collection."
