The coin shown is a billon one para from the reign of Sultan Mahmud II. It is a crudely hammered coin, and was struck at the Cairo Mint. The obverse bears the toughra, or signature, of the sultan. The reverse carries the accession date and the text minted in Misr (Misr is Arabic for Egypt). Both sides have a bordering floral design. The date is written as AH 1223 year 21, which translates to about 1827 AD. This was one of the last hammered coins in Egypt, as milled planchets were brought into service a few years later.
