Sincona sale 83, lot 2300

This specimen was lot 2300 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 875 CHF (about US$1,171 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Arabische Republik, seit 1971. 50 Pounds 1988 / 1408 H., Proof. Olympische Spiele - Pharao und Athleten. Selten. Nur 50 Exemplare geprägt (Rare. Only 50 pieces struck). NGC PF69 ULTRA CAMEO." This is one of three gold fifty pounds (KM 625, 627, 629) issued for the 1988 Olympics. Despite the tiny mintage, its catalog value is barely above its melt value (around $480 in June 2023). Interestingly, the Hegira date (AH 1408) is visible only next to the statue of the Pharoah.

Recorded mintage: 150 plus 50 proofs.

Specification: 8.5 g, 0.900 fine gold; this specimen 8.50 g.

Catalog reference: KM 625, Fr-212.
