Egypt H3064-30706r.jpg

The Kingdom of Egypt was established in 1922, with Fuad I as the first ruler. He had previously been sultan (1917-1922) when Egypt was a British protectorate. During his reign, Egyptian coinage was changed significantly from previous issues, with the portrait of the leader decorating the obverse. Previously, no human portraits appeared on coins. The coin pictured is a silver ten piastres. The portrait of Fuad I is on the obverse, with the year reverse (both Hijra and Gregorian dates shown), denomination, and 'Kingdom of Egypt' written in Arabic. This specimen was lot 30706 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "Fuad I 10 Piastres AH 1348 (1929) MS65 NGC. A universally small mintage figure for the year, and from an altogether fleeting issue, this offering presents the uniformed bust of Fuad I atop blush-hued, satin-textured surfaces that are dappled with moments of graphite color. Presently the only certified example of the date at this level at NGC, with none graded finer."

Recorded mintage: 400,000.

Specification: 14.00 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 350.
