The first specimen was lot 22268 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $470. The catalog description[1] noted, "ECUADOR. 1/2 Real (Medio Real), 1833-GJ. Quito Mint. NGC EF-40. Final digit of date doubled. Coin axis. RARE first year of issue. Nice quality for issue, typical crude manufacture." This type was struck 1833 only and normally encountered in Fine or lower. It is among the earliest coins struck in Ecuador. Another variety (KM 12.2) exists for 1833 where the denomination is expressed as "½ R" rather than "MO R". The KM 12.1 shown here is very scarce; the KM 12.2 is rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.3 g, 0.667 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-12.1; Seppa-15; Carr-13.
