Sincona sale 43, lot 3282

This specimen was lot 3282 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$656 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ECUADOR, Republik, 1 Escudo 1828. Quito. Sehr schön. (republic of Ecuador, one escudo of 1828, Quito mint. Very fine.)"

Altho the Sincona cataloguers did not so note, this specimen is almost certainly a counterfeit. The weight is wrong; the die style is incorrect; no Ecuadorean coins are known with assayer GY and no Ecuadorean gold coins are known dated 1828. The only consolation is that the winning bidder likely knew this coin was a fake or it would have sold for multiples of the reported price realized (see the 1833 escudo for comparison).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.3 g, 0.875 fine gold, this specimen 2.44 g.

Catalog reference: KM 15.
