This specimen is of a type issued by Ecuador in the first years of independence, after leaving the confederacy of Gran Colombia. No local minting of coins occurred until the 1830's; all issues prior are countermarks on colonial or independent South American coins.

The first coin shown was lot 1406 and sold on April 13, 2010, for $690 at an auction held by Daniel Frank Sedwick LLC. The catalog description reads:

"Quito, Ecuador, 8 reales, 'MDQ' countermark (Moneda de Quito, 1831) on a Bogotá, Colombia (Cundinamarca) 8 reales of 1821 rare. Bold full countermark on host coin that is no better than Good, yet with bold legends, toned, with crude rim and centers as usual, popular type as effectively the first 'crown' of Ecuador."

The second specimen was lot 11396 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[2] noted,

"ECUADOR. (1831) Moneda de Quito 8 Reales. Quito mint. VG-8 (PCGS). Script 'MDQ' countermark on an 1821-BaJF Cundinamarca 8 Reales, KM-C6. Medium gray and olive with good eye appeal. Very original, with some encrustation and shallow reverse laminations. A few minor hairlines are present but inconsequential. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins."

This countermark was also applied to 1/4, 1/2, 1 and 2 reales from Colombia.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 23.00 g, 0.66 fine silver (host, KM6); the first specimen 21.8 grams.

Catalog reference: KM 10.
