Germany, after World War II, was occupied by the various forces of the Allies. Of these, the Soviets did not follow through with the principles of the Potsdam agreement and did not withdraw their forces. Thus, Germany became split with the east becoming a Soviet satellite state (the Democratic Republic) and the west forming the Federal Republic.
The coin shown is an aluminum five pfennig, minted in Berlin (mint mark A at upper reverse). All issues from the Democratic Republic were aluminum into the 1960's, except for the five mark and are noted for their drab design.
