East Germany 1972-A 5 mark KM-37
This specimen was lot 6635 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €320 (about US$445 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK, 1949-1990. 5 Mark 1972. Meissen. Ohne Randschrift. Von großer Seltenheit. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, people's republic, 1949-90, five mark of 1972, Meissen mint, without edge lettering. Very rare, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This circulating commemorative was struck by the communist regime at Berlin. The SCWC does not mention the edge lettering error; the regular issue has a low price altho there is little demand for East German issues. This design was used again in 1981 and 1983.
Recorded mintage: 3,500,000.
Specification: 9.7 g, copper-nickel, 29 mm diameter.
