This specimen was lot 73467 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $55. The catalog description[1] noted, "EAST CARIBBEAN STATES. 2 Cents, 1991. PCGS SPECIMEN-63 Gold Shield. Square shaped. The single-finest example of the date in the PCGS census, this choice piece would likely receive an even higher designation if not for some planchet impurities near the peripheries of each side. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." The East Caribbean States formed as a loose union of island nations in the Caribbean, all of which are former members of the British Caribbean Territories prior to its dissolution in 1965. The current full membership states are Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Coins of the East Caribbean States continue to mix with those of the older British Caribbean Territories in circulation. This type was struck 1981, 1984-2000. It is square with rounded corners.
