East Caribbean States 1989 5 cents
This specimen was lot 73465 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "EAST CARIBBEAN STATES. 5 Cents, 1989. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. Scallop shaped. One of the middle dates in the series, this brilliant Gem presents a slight reverse proof nature through its mirrored devices and slightly matte fields owing to some die polishing. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." The East Caribbean States formed as a loose union of island nations in the Caribbean, all of which are former members of the British Caribbean Territories prior to its dissolution in 1965. The current full membership states are Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Coins of the East Caribbean States continue to mix with those of the older British Caribbean Territories in circulation. This type was struck 1981, 1984-2000. It is scalloped.
