Künker sale 264, lot 3664
Dortmund in 1648

This specimen was lot 3664 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €700 (about US$904 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSMÜNZSTÄTTE Friedrich III. 1440-1493. Goldgulden o. J. (nach 1451). GOLD. Sehr schön. (Germany, city of Dortmund, Frederick III, 1440-93. undated gold gulden. Very fine.)"

The gold issues of the city of Dortmund are few and expensive. This five century old issue is probably the least rare. Today, Dortmund is part of the Ruhr valley industrial complex; in the fifteenth century, Dortmund was an insignificant free city sandwiched between the county of Mark and the bishopric of Munster.

Recorded mintage: unknown but few.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW; this specimen is 3.23 g.

Catalog reference: Berghaus 111; Fr-855.
