Dominican Republic 1961 1/2 peso

The specimen shown was struck for the Dominican Republic towards the end of the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo. The type was struck intermittently 1937-61; this date is the most common.
