This specimen was lot 71741 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "DJIBOUTI. 15000 Francs, 1991. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. A very pretty and elusive issue, this piece celebrates Djibouti nearly-flawlessly." We are uncertain as to what this NCLT commemorates. It is silver with a bit of gold plated onto part of the reverse, probably to increase its marketability. Djibouti is a desert country, independent from France since 1977, in the Horn of Africa that serves largely as a port for neighboring Ethiopia.
Recorded mintage: est. 10,000.
Specification: 24 g, silver plus 5 grains of gold. AGW: 0.01041 oz.
Catalog reference: KM-28.
