The Republic of Djibouti is the former French Somaliland, acquired in 1839 from provincial sultans, and made into a French colony in 1896. The area received its independence from France in 1977 and remains poor tho without the governmental collapse experienced by Somalia next door. The specimen shown was lot 1732 in Steve Album Auction #10 on April 22, 2011, and did not sell. The catalog description reads:"DJIBOUTI: Jules Gérard Auguste Lauret, governor, 1918-1924, 50 centimes, 1921, signed by the engraver Thevenon, struck in aluminum-bronze, Very Fine, RR."
