Dietrichstein 1664 thaler Dav-3375
This specimen was lot 4857 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €7,000 (about US$9,160 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH. DIE ÖSTERREICHISCHEN STANDESHERREN, DIETRICHSTEIN, Sigismund Helfried, 1664-1698. Reichstaler 1664, Graz. Brustbild r.//Gekröntes und verziertes Wappen (zwei Winzermesser), umher Palmzweige. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Kabinettstück, Erstabschlag, Stempelglanz (prooflike). (Holy Roman Empire, princes of Dietrichstein, Sigismund Helfried, 1664-98, thaler of 1664, Graz mint. Obverse: bust right; reverse: crowned and quartered arms in palm wreath. Very rare in this quality, cabinet piece, first strike, uncirculated.)"
The princes of Dietrichstein were not territorial lords but servants to the emperor who were granted the mint right. Several thalers were struck in the seventeenth century, all rare.
