Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 30469
SB822-30469r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30469 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Dewas (Junior Branch). 1/12 Anna, 1888. Narayan Rao (under Victoria as Empress). PCGS MS-63 Brown. The finest certified 'brown' example of the type, this impressive emission displays sharp details and a reddish-brown hue to the surfaces. Original mint glossiness clings to the surface, and this example can only be marginally faulted for a few spots of green. Dewas coinage has appreciated quite considerably, and we have high hope for this sporty minor." Dewas, now in Madya Pradesh in modern India, was a princely state divided into two parts, the junior branch ruling the northern part and the senior branch the southern. The SCWC notes twelfth and quarter annas were struck for both branches in 1888.

Recorded mintage: 112,000 plus proofs (includes twelfth annas struck for Dewas, senior branch).

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-11; Prid-1023.
