Deventer (1619) 5 stuiver
This specimen was lot 2508 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,785 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, DEVENTER, Stad, AR 5 stuiver (1/10 arendrijksdaalder), z.j. (1619). Met titel van keizer Matthias I. Mmt. klaverblad. Vz/ Gehelmd stadswapen. Kz/ Gekroonde rijksarend met rijksappel en waarde 5 op de borst. Uiterst zeldzaam. bijna Prachtig. (Netherlands, city of Deventer, undated silver five stuivers or one tenth eagle daalder, struck in the name of emperor Mathias I. Obverse: helmeted arms; reverse: crowned imperial eagle supporting an orb with the value. Extremely rare, about extremely fine.)"
Deventer left the empire, along with the rest of the United Provinces, by the terms of the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. This undated type is listed in the SCWC as a tenth eagle daalder. We don't know why this example is double the expected weight.
