Denmark 1911-VBP GJ 25 ore
This specimen was lot 3013 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK: Frederik VIII, 1906-1912, AE 25 øre, 1911, initials VBP-GJ, two-year type, a lovely example! NGC graded MS67. Tied for finest graded at NGC." Danish currency endured several "reforms" in the nineteenth century. In 1874, the coinage was reformed again to the current system of 100 øre = one krone. This type is listed for 1907 and 1911 and is common. This denomination ceased to be silver after 1919. The Scandinavian countries (Norway, Denmark and Sweden) formed their own monetary union in competition with the Latin Monetary Union based on the French twenty francs d'or. Like that union, the Scandinavian Monetary Union lasted until World War One blasted all hard currencies out of existence.
