Stack's Bowers November 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 76420
SB1125-76420r.jpg

This specimen was lot 76420 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 12 Mark (Courant Ducat), 1761/0. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik V. NGC AU Details--Bent. AGW: 0.0877 oz." This denomination was struck 1757-65 in many varieties (KM 587.1-587.7). Ths particular one, with initials VH, is known for 1758-61. Altho the this coin quacks like a ducat, it is too light and too low in fineness to qualify. It was actually a twelve mark altho the government called them "ducats courant" in the hopes that merchants would accept them as full ducats. It is unlikely anyone was fooled for long. Until 1813, one ducat = 2 speciedaler = 12 mark = 192 skilling Danske.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.11 g, 0.875 fine gold, 21 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-269; KM-587.3.
