Denmark (15)54 sosling
This specimen was lot 10142 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €129 (about US$149). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Gotland. Søsling, 1554. Copenhagen Mint. Christian III. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. A beautiful and very well-struck coin with a clear Agnus Dei on the obverse, the Lamb of God. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." Gotland, an island in the Baltic Sea, traded hands several times in the Middle Ages, even being held by pirates for a time. It was ruled by Denmark from 1449 until its cession to Sweden in 1645 at the end of the Torstenson War. This søsling, or half a skilling, was struck 1554 only. Numista states the animal on the reverse is a "Ram walking left" but we think it is intended to be the Agnus Dei, or Lamb of God.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.85 g, silver, 26-27 mm diameter.
