SB225-10184r.jpg

This specimen was lot 10184 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €85 (about US$89). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Søsling Lybsk, 1643. Gluckstadt Mint. Christian IV. NGC VF-35. Through strike. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922)." Gluckstadt, a town on the Elbe downstream of the city of Hamburg, was founded in 1617 by the king of Denmark and later made the capital of the duchy of Holstein, which he ruled. This søsling Lybsk, equal to a Danish skilling, was struck there 1640-48. The denomination is spelled variously "SOESLIN" or "SECHSLIN". Christian IV (r. 1588-1648), king of Denmark and duke of Schleswig-Holstein, had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.76 g, 0.312 fine silver, 17 mm diameter.
