SB126-41181r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41181 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. Danzig. Ducat, 1676-DL. Danzig Mint. John III Sobieski. PCGS Genuine--Holed, AU Details. A tremendously impressive and engaging issue, this specimen does exhibit an unfortunate hole punched near the edge of the king's head, but the remaining details are well preserved and radiant, with an original brilliance beaming throughout and hardly any evidence of any actual handling. A SCARCE and important opportunity no matter the details designation. From the Collection of Kazmier Wysocki, former mayor of Hackensack, New Jersey." This subtype was struck for Jan III Sobieski in 1676 only. Jan III Sobieski (r. 1674-96) temporarily reversed the decline in the power of the Polish crown and defeated the Turks at the siege of Vienna in 1683.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.49 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-36; KM-72.1; Kop-7689.
