Poland-Danzig 1577 thaler rev Ponterio 169-10611.jpg

This specimen was lot 10611 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $15,275. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. Danzig. Taler, 1577. PCGS Genuine--Devices Engraved, EF Details Secure Holder. A RARE type coin with decent eye appeal. Sharp with some re-engraving of the details noted under inspection. Struck during the siege of Stephan Bathory. From the Katherine Gordon Kron Collection of Revolutionary Coins and Currency." At the time this coin was issued, Danzig was a German city only loosely under Polish rule. Bathory invested the city in 1577 when it refused to recognize his election to the throne of Poland. While he defeated the Danzig mercenary army, he was unable to take the city itself. He negotiated a settlement wherein he recognized the city's privileges in exchange for homage and an indemnity.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.
