Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 8627
SB122-8627r.jpg

This specimen was lot 8627 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted,

"CUBA. Mexico. Peso, ND (1872-77). PCGS Genuine--Repaired, VF Details; Countermark: VF Details. Variety A, Short and think key countermark. Countermark applied to the obverse of a 1866-7-Mo Mexico Peso of Maximilian. A RARE and seldom encountered host coin from this series. The countermark is boldly applied and full on a moderately worn host coin displaying molten gray patina complemented with hints of almond amongst the devices. The reverse exhibits signs of being brooch mounted, long since removed and somewhat smooth out, muddling portions of the reverse devices. Despite its shortcomings a decent and presentable example of the type that is sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters."

This countermark was applied to various Mexican and U.S. coins during the Ten Years War (1868-78), the first major revolt against Spanish rule. The second revolt, beginning in 1896, attracted American support, leading to the Spanish-American War of 1898. Cuba received her independence in 1903 at the cost of becoming an American client state.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-R6; ANS-Not listed.
