Cuba (1872-77) 25 centavos KM-R4.1
This specimen was lot 790 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $450. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cuba, 25 centavos, short key incuse countermark (1872-77) on a Mexico City, Mexico, 25 centavos, 1875M. Choice full countermark on eagle side of a VF host (nice grade for these) with light toning around details, a few light marks, popular and important issue from the time of Cuba's "Ten Years War" against Spain (1868-78)." This countermark was applied to various Mexican and U.S. coins during the Ten Years War (1868-78), the first major revolt against Spanish rule. The second revolt, beginning in 1896, attracted American support, leading to the Spanish-American War of 1898. Cuba received her independence in 1903 at the cost of becoming an American client state. We attribute this counterstamp to 1873 as that is the date on the coin.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: host coin 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, this specimen 6.64 grams.
