Cuba (1841) 4 reales KM-7
This specimen was lot 71281 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA. Cuba - Spain. 4 Reales, ND (1841). Isabel II. PCGS VG-10. Countermark: Lattice with sun in center. Issued by decree of 22 March 1841. Applied to the obverse of a 1811-M Spain (Madrid) 4 Reales de Vellon (KM-540.1). A deeply toned example with a nice silhouette bust and a strong countermark. This piece retains an attractive sheen to complement the gray tone." This countermark is fairly common in low grade. The countermark was also used to validate two reales on various hosts. While the mainland colonies were struggling to obtain independence from Spain, Cuba held aloof. The elite there, largely slaveholders, wanted no part of any social upheaval which might threaten their position. The explosion came later, after the Civil War ended slavery in the United States.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 5.41 g, 0.903 fine silver, .157 troy oz ASW.
