Croatia 1994 1000 kuna
This specimen was lot 6689 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "CROATIA. 1000 Kuna, 1994. NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo. Featuring Pope John Paul II. A brilliant Proof with mirrored fields, frosty cameo devices, and faint toning at the peripheries." This NCLT honors the late pope and was likely struck on the occasion of a visit. It was accompanied by a silver 100 kuna (KM 26). Wikipedia comments, "Croatia adopted the euro as its currency on 1 January 2023, becoming the 20th member state of the eurozone. A fixed conversion rate was set at €1 = 7.5345 k[una]."

Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold, 25 mm diameter (same standard as an old double ducat).
