This specimen was lot 31248 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $188. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Peso 1864-GW, XF Details (Mount Removed) NGC. Good details with a few noticeable marks along the edges." After several misfired attempted to strike a national coinage in the 1850's, the Costa Ricans tried again with a decimal coinage in 1864. This gold peso was accompanied by a silver twenty-five centavos (KM 105 and 106). The next year, a copper-nickel centavo (KM 109) and silver five centavos (KM 110), ten centavos (KM 111) and fifty centavos (KM 112) were added. Eventually other gold denominations appeared but in very limited numbers as bullion was scarce in Central America.

Recorded Mintage: 6,383.

Specification: 1.52 g, 0.875 fine gold, .043 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 107.1.
