Corvey in 1789, to the east of Paderborn on the Weser river

This specimen was lot 72202 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Corvey. 2 Mariengroschen, 1653. PCGS AU-58. This impressive specimen displays strong details and pleasing eye appeal, with much retained beauty on flan with rich details and soft color that hide amongst the legends and devices." This type was struck 1649-55. The abbey also issued a one mariengroschen (KM 55) in 1653. The abbey of Corvey, annexed by Nassau in 1803, issued a long series of thalers in the seventeenth century, all too rare to have photos in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, 17-19 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-43.
