This specimen was lot 70574 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "COOK ISLANDS. 100 Dollars, 1979-FM. Pennsylvania (Franklin) Mint. NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo. Struck to commemorate membership in the Commonwealth of Nations." The Cook Islands, like many small, impoverished nations, has contracted with private mints to produce and market a large variety of commemoratives marketed in lands far from the issuing country. This one honors the admission of the Cook Islands to the Commonwealth of Nations.
Recorded mintage: 3,367 proofs plus 400 "uncirculated".
