Constance H3064-32861r.jpg
Constance in 1803, on its annexation by Baden, from Putzger's atlas

This specimen was lot 32861 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "Constance. Franz Conrad 1/2 Taler 1761-FH MS63 NGC, Augsburg mint. A scarce one year type coin with a sterling depiction of the Bishop. Franz Conrad was both a Cardinal and a Bishop, and both titles are found in the coin's legend." Constance is a town on the shores of the lake of the same name. Though it has always been surrounded by Swiss territory, it was never part of the Swiss Confederation. Originally ecclesiastical territory, the town wrested its independence during the Reformation and maintained it until Napoleon handed it to the Grand Duchy of Baden. This coin was issued by the bishop. The SCWC lists this type for 1761 only along with a ducat, thaler and quarter thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.

Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 17.
