Colombia 1858-B 1/4 real
This specimen was lot 20339 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1/4 Real, 1858. Bogotá Mint. PCGS EF-40 Secure Holder. KEY TYPE AND DATE. Type with caduc[e]us at either side of denomination on reverse, and the much better year of the two years issued. Completely intact design with a wash of blue toning covering portions of the fields. A type typically seen missing from even the most advanced collections, and in the relatively high grade seen here a coin sure to generate much excitement." This is the last issue of this denomination, which was converted to a quarter décimo or 2½ centavos in 1860. The Popayán issue (KM 108.2) for 1858 is scarce and the Bogotá, shown here, is rare.
