Colombia 1842-P VU 16 pesos
This specimen was lot 12158 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1842-VU 16 Pesos. Popayán mint. MS-61 (PCGS). Frosty and lustrous with good eye appeal for the grade. The left obverse is a bit bulged, but the strike is full on both sides. Free of any significant defects. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Hans M.F. Schulman's sale of the José da Costa Gomez Collection, March 1969, lot 412." This type, struck at Popayán 1837-46, replaced the earlier eight escudos (KM 82.2) and is identical in size and weight. It was also produced at Bogotá. Assayer VU is listed for 1841-42; assayer UM is noted for 1842-46.
