Colombia 1822-B JF 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 12105 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1822-JF 8 Escudos. Bogotá mint. AU-58 (PCGS). Lustrous light yellow gold with some old encrustation adding contrast to the peripheral legends. Very nicely struck for this issue, with full central detail on the reverse. Well centered, frosty and pleasing. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Stack's sale of May 1971, lot 816." This type was struck at Popayán 1822-36 and at Bogotá 1822-38. It was superseded by the quasi-decimal sixteen pesos issued at both mints 1837-49. Both types are common enough that some attempt to collect complete date sets. This date has a slight premium in the catalog. Assayer JF is known for 1808-27.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
