Sedwick sale 12, lot 141

This specimen was lot 141 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $890.90. The catalog description[1] noted, "Popayán, Colombia, bust 2 escudos, Charles III (bust of Ferdinand VI), 1770J. Attractively red-toned XF, no problems, scarce." This specimen is one of a series struck 1760-71 at the Popayán mint in Nueva Granada, now Colombia, during the reign of Charles III (1759-88). The Popayán mint used the old bust of Ferdinand VI until 1771, even tho the Bogotá mint was using a bust of Charles III after 1762. The two Colombian mints concentrated on issuing gold during this period; silver coinage prior to the 1810's is very rare.
