Colombia (1703)-SF 1/4 real
The first specimen was lot 11135 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. (1703) 1/4 Real or Cuartillo. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos II (1665-1700). VF Details — Plugged (PCGS). Called plugged by PCGS, though this appears to just be holed, with the hole filled with encrustation. A very scarce posthumous type of Carlos II. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins." The second specimen was lot 51008 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[2] noted, "COLOMBIA. Cob 1/4 Real, ND (ca. 1705-22). Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogota) Mint. Philip V. NGC VF-35. Variety with corded border. A deeply toned Cuartillo with well-presented depictions of the castle and lion along with much of the distinctive border design. Quite wholesome and certainly among the finest examples extant for this EXTREMELY RARE type. An exciting offering for advanced collectors of Colombian colonial issues. Research by Herman Blanton draws a distinction between two types of these Bogota Cuartillos with ornate borders: this corded border and a more embellished trefoil type. Attempts to match the castle and lion to punches found on 8 Reales issues were unsuccessful, but because the trefoil design matches up quite closely to the security edge used in later milled issues, Blanton surmises that they emanate from the time of Ferdinand VI. As for this simpler corded-border type, loose attribution to the first reign of Philip V is the best guess based on similarities to the borders found on 1721-dated 8 Reales. From the EMO Collection. Ex: Baldwin's Auction 68 (09/2010), Lot # 4016 (Hammer price: 4200 GBP)."
