Künker sale 336, lot 6544

This specimen was lot 6544 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €37,000 (about US$48,418 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖLN, ERZBISTUM. Joseph Klemens von Bayern, 1688-1702. 3 Dukaten 1696 (geprägt 1698), Bonn, geprägt aus westfälischem Gold, das 1696 bei Brilon gefördert wurde. IOS · CLEM · EL · COL · VTR · BAV · WESTP · ET · ANG · DUX · / AURUM WESTP · 1696 INVENT . Mit Kurhut bedecktes, vierfeldiges Stiftswappen mit vierfeldigem Mittelschild (Pfalz/Bayern), dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt//+ REGES DE SABA VENIVNT AURUM DEFEREN · ET LAUDEM DNO ANNUN · Die Heiligen Drei Könige beten die vor ihnen sitzende Maria mit dem Kind an, neben ihr steht Josef v. v. oben der Stern von Bethlehem. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. Aus altem Münchner Besitz. The archbishopric of Cologne, like Mainz and Trier, was an ecclesiastical state along the river Rhine whose ruler was one of the Electors of the Empire. In 1688 the old archbishop (Maximilian Henry of Bavaria, r. 1650-88) died and his replacement (Joseph Clemens of Bavaria, r. 1688-1723) elevated. The example shown in the SCWC for this type is from different dies.
