Künker sale 294, lot 3668

This specimen was lot 3668 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €440 (about US$593 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖLN, ERZBISTUM, Friedrich III. von Saarwerden, 1371-1414. Goldgulden o. J. (1407), Bonn. GOLD. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 234, Osnabrück 2013, Nr. 3830. (Germany, archbishopric of Cologne, Frederick III of Saarwerden, 1371-1414, undated goldgulden, Bonn mint. Very fine.)"

Both the city and the archbishop of Cologne (or Koln) issued gold ducats and it takes a keen eye to tell them apart. Friedberg notes this type as fairly common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3,46 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-790a; Noss 250 a.
