Chur in Switzerland in 1648

This specimen was lot 31519 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $493.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Chur. City Taler ND XF45 PCGS. A typically crude example of this rare type featuring the portrait of an armored St. Lucius, presented here with ample residual luster and light reverse adjustments. From the Redwood Collection, Part II." The second specimen was lot 3350 in Sincona sale 64 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$407 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Grisons | Chur, Stadt, Taler o. J. Chur. Gutes sehr schön. Kleines Zainende und kaum sichtbare Henkelspur. (city of Chur, undated thaler, Chur mint. Good very fine, Edge clip and minimal mount mark.)"

Chur, along with the rest of Switzerland, left the Empire in 1648 as part of the Treaty of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War. The city arms feature a leaping ibex but this coin was issued by the bishop. This type is also known dated 1620 and 1626.

Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce.
