The Chola Kingdom was founded in 850 AD when its first leader captured the city of Tanjore. The empire would go on to dominate parts of Southern India and for a time, annex Sri Lanka and the Maldives. This specimen is an undated silver 1 kahavanu from the rule of Rajendra Chola (1014-1050 AD) who is named as Gangaikonda Chola or 'conqueror of the Ganga Valley' on the coin.
