Chile 1955 100 pesos
The specimen shown is an example of a type first struck in Santiago, Chile, in 1926. It was issued steadily 1932-80 with no pretense of it being a circulating coin, especially after the peso had been dropped in favor of the escudo in 1960. It was and is a bullion coin, along with a similar gold 20 pesos (KM 168) and 50 pesos (KM 169). The type is common but the recent bold rise in the price of gold has made this coin expensive. This specimen was lot 32621 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 100 Pesos 1955-So MS66 PCGS, Santiago mint. Gem mint-state and desirable at this grade level."
