Chile 1938 5 centavos
The first specimen was lot 72429 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 5 Centavos, 1938-So. Santiago Mint. PCGS MS-67+. A rather charming and beautiful specimen, this example is the finest of the type certified by PCGS and approaches perfection. An elusive example when preserved this nicely and worthy of a bid from the specialist in Chilean pieces." The specimen shown is a type struck 1920-28 and 1933-38. It superseded a debased silver type struck 1901-19 (KM 155.1-155.3). This type is the last of its denomination prior to the reform of 1960. This date is common. This example sold for 81 times the catalog value. Oscar Roty's defiant condor, first used in 1895, appeared on virtually all Chilean silver and copper-nickel coins until 1940.
Recorded mintage: 2,000,000.
Specification: 2 g, copper-nickel, 16.5 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-165.
