Chile 1889-So peso
This is a peso minted in Santiago, Chile, in 1889. It is a scarce date of a common type struck 1868-91 but nice examples are always worth a premium. The first specimen was lot 2434 in Goldberg sale 100 (Los Angeles, September 2017), where it sold for $675.62. The catalog description[1] noted, "Chile. Peso, 1889-So. Condor. Lovely peripheral tone with flashy full original mint luster. NGC graded MS-64." The second specimen was lot 22377 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[2] noted, "CHILE. Peso, 1889-So. NGC MS-65. Second finest certified. Sharply struck with soft satin luster. Brilliant and attractive. From the Alex Siegel Collection."
Recorded mintage: 241,000, a somewhat better date.
Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz ASW, reeded edge, 37 mm diameter.
