Chile 1844-So IJ real
This specimen was lot 71474 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. Real, 1844-So IJ. Santiago Mint. PCGS AU-53. A blast white example with just hints of golden toning in the peripheries. Light wear, nice color, and a clean design all contribute in making this a desirable example of the type. From the David Sterling Collection." This type was struck 1843-50. The design, with a condor tearing the chains of slavery, is also found on half real, 2 reales and 8 reales coins of the period. This design is very popular with collectors and brings quite a bit more than the rather low catalog values. The date is also known in a large shield variety (KM 94.1).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3 g, 0.902 fine silver, 19 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-94.2.
